King Crab Safari by RIB
Join us out on the Barents Sea to pull crab traps before enjoying fresh king crab served in our atmospheric lavvo at Camp Sarnes.
Tour description
Along the weather-beaten coast near the North Cape lives one of the ocean’s most impressive creatures, the legendary king crab. On this Arctic adventure, you’ll get to experience the entire journey from the depths of the sea to your plate.
The tour starts in Honningsvåg, where you’ll meet your guide and be issued the necessary safety equipment before we walk about 400 meters to the floating dock and board our RIB boat. The fast and stable boat takes us out onto the Barents Sea, surrounded by dramatic mountains, open ocean, and fresh Arctic air.
Out at sea, we pull up the crab traps and check today’s catch. Here you’ll get to experience the impressive king crab up close and hear the story of how this giant from the Pacific Ocean found its way to the Barents Sea and eventually became an important part of coastal culture in Northern Norway.
Then we set course for our idyllic camp at Sarnes.
Here you’ll get even closer to the king crab, and on the pier you’ll see it up close while the guide explains the crab’s anatomy and demonstrates how we prepare it for the next step toward your plate.
While the king crab is being prepared, you’ll be invited into our cozy tent restaurant, where you can enjoy a warm campfire and a cup of coffee, tea, or a cold drink while you wait.
Eventually, the fresh king crab is served in the traditional way with bread, mayonnaise, and lemon—a true taste of the Arctic. After the meal, we board the RIB boat again and return to Honningsvåg.
This is an experience that combines nature, history, and gastronomy in a truly unique way. You won’t find king crab any fresher—from the Barents Sea to your plate in just a few hours!
